Peter Calthorpe, an urban desginer, architect, planner began a new
approach to urban revitalization, suburban growth, and regional
planning, combining his experience in each discipline.
In this
video he talks about the complexity of the sitution we find ourselves in
today's world. At the same time we are solving the climate changes, we
are going to build cities for three billion people. That is doubling the
urban environment. He said in the video that if we don't get this
right, he is not sure we all the climates solutions in the world will
save mankind, because so much depends on how we shape our cities. That
is not just the environmental impacts, but our social well-being, our
economy vitality, our sense of community and connectedness.
He
mention sprawl as the villain of this story, but as low-density
development. Sprawl can happen anywhere, however, its attribute is to
isolote people, to segregrate them into economic enclaves and land-use
enclaves. Sprawl separates people from nature, does not allow
interaction, that makes cities great places and that make society
thrive.
From here he goes into Los Angeles, California and a
Chinese model as examples for the antidote to sprawl. In thes models he
mixed different development prototypes which will reduce the impact of
carbon monoxeide emissions but making these cities more walkable, and
with all the benefits to a neighborhood's life. These benefits change
the people's habits.
